Gunkholing very comprehensive
This new edition has the local information I was looking for. It has detailed information on anchorages, local marinas - with contact information - local people, history, and lots of pictures of where you may be planning to go. It is informative on a number of related subjects, and was very entertaining. A must for anyone planning to cruse in the San Juan Islands. It's my most used book on the subject.

Images of the San Juans: Historical Selections from the Ruth and Marvin Gregory Photograph Collection
Published in Hardcover by Western Reflections Inc (September, 1997)
Authors: P. David Smith, Marvin Gregory, and Ruth Gregory
Average review score:

A most fascinating book!
I have a collection of more than 100 books relating to Colorado andits history. "Images of the San Juans" is my favorite.

The large and well-preserved photographs from the Marvin and Ruth Gregory collection are fascinating as are the descriptions by P. David Smith. Most books offer only a sentence or two about a photograph but Mr. Smith gives a detailed description in a most interesting style. He points out small details in many of the photos which might otherwise go unnoticed. He answers questions and even raises a few of his own. I felt like I was being let in on some secrets from the past.

When I received the book, I anxiously leafed through the pages and stopped on page 38. The first words I read were "A chance to look back into the past is always something special."

Indeed, I enjoyed the journey through time.

This is a 'must' cookbook for serious chefs
The most interesting thing about IN SEASON is the author's personal tales relative to each of the principal ingredients about which he writes. Lies, Legends and Lore
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (01 May, 1999)
Author: Roger Henn
Average review score:

Extraordinary Reading
Roger Henn, a native of Ouray, Colo., has been described as a storyteller extraordinaire, and indeed he is! In "Lies, Legends & Lore," his second book, Henn has compiled 43 stories he has collected over a lifetime of events that occurred? in the San Juans. No, the question mark is not a mistake. You see, with Henn one is never quite sure what to make of his stories. The following quote from the preface will give you an idea of what you can expect. "Unfortunately too many of today's historians are engaged in debunking the lore involved with the history and the personalities of the West...Give me the story that is told so well you are not sure when the truth stops and the great lie begins." I have read a considerable amount of history of the San Juan area but Henn's book introduced me to a virtual gold mine of little known facts and stories of everyday folks who settled the mountain towns that comprise the San Juans. The story of Billy Nagle, the murderer, will touch your heaart and leave you forever wondering if perhaps there is room for compassion in the administration of justice. The story of Rose's Cabin will bring back many memories tp those who have traveled the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway, or would like to. The story of Snow Snakes and Snow Mosquitoes, along with the one about a pet fly and murder, or justifiable homicide, will provide you with ample evidence that Henn surely deserves the title of storyteller extraordinaire. If you are looking for a well written, easy to read, delightful and informative book about the history and lore of the San Juan Mountain area, this book is a must read. Henn is one of those rare writers that can tell a story in print that leaves you feeling he is talking directly to you from in front of the livery stable in Ouray. And that's a fact!

Review of Mining the Hard Rock
A fascinating look into the history of mining in Southwest Colorado. The book is full of photographs and interviews that paint a real picture of what life was like for the men who worked the mines, and the mothers, wives , and daughters who lived with them in these isolated and rugged communities. The book provides an understanding not only of the tremendous hardships the miners endured, but also of the incredible accomplishments they achieved. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Southwest, or the history of hard rock mining.

Get to KNOW Mission San Juan
This book gives you a present day, and historical look at the Mission. It captures so much of the spirit. It is beautifully photographed, each picture being a treasure in itself. It is wonderfully illustrated - the artist certainly understands the Mission, and it is so well written. The author paints a picture of the old and new in an amazing way. The whole book is a work of art in itself.
